Although three years have passed since his tragic and mysterious death, my love and appreciation for his music have not waned an inch. This week, although I was a degree late again (ahhh, so goes my life), Sylvia and I rocked out hard. Daniel most unfortunately could not join us, but dispite said fact, we had plenty of music to go around. We got the new Neko Case album into the radio station (not yet released, mind you!) and indulged in the siren's delicious new songs. Also, we stumbled upon a new band called the M's, a Bowie-inspired indie outfit, and exposed our faithful listeners to thier joyful sound!

Much to our dismay, we found out this week that www.UCLARadio.com is in grave budget trouble and is being threatened with termination by August. The only thing that can save the station is a referendum on the ballot to add a $6 fee to student's Union fees to support student media. It is going to be a uphill battle, trying to get students to agree to more fee increases, but for the sake of college radio we are going to try and stay alive. This week was a busy one in the corner! If you couldn't tell, I was late yet again, but thankfully my beloved intern Sylvia started the show without breaking a sweat. There were people milling about the station all day long, and interesting requests being thrown out left and right. At one point, my linguistic major friend Skory dared us to play a song in a language that he could not identify. We were successful, and stumped him with a fine Macedonian ditty (see #27). Daniel was back with us this week, also, so he took songs 11 through 17, and Sylvia got songs 18 through 23 (we got some metal during that set!). All in all, another successful week transgressed before your very ears.

Today I was a tad late... I blame traffic, haha. However, because Edgar Campos (the phenomenal DJ with the show just before mine) gave Intern Sylvia a crash course in starting up the show, she covered for me until I got there around 2:10. As is tradition at UCLAradio.com, every fourth week the midday shows (like the Corner) get a pair of interns to train before they are assigned to their own show (it is how we stay alive, against all odds). I got my interns today, and forced them to talk on the air. It was completely endearing. Intern Daniel Berkman took the second half hour of the show and played songs 7 through 15. Intern Sylvia Wei took the third half hour and played songs 16 through 20. Although there were some silly transitions and lots of on-air giggling, they did an overall amazing job. I am really looking forward to working with them through the rest of the quarter!

Welcome, folks, to the Philosopher's Corner. Although it has been brought to my attention that this is, in fact, not a corner so much as it is a blog, we still represent a safehaven for musical philosophers... a corner in the moral support proverbial sense. Anyway, for those of you who navigated here by chance, the Philosopher's Corner is my radio program on www.UCLAradio.com that airs every Friday from 2-4. We are most casual in our genre selection, yet our standards for fine music remain stringent.
